A Rare Recording of Jack White Covering Blondie Has Been Unearthed

A thank you to Ben Blackwell is in order.

The White Stripes archivist and Third Man Records co-founder recently unearthed a cassette tape from the '90s that features Jack White covering Blondie's "One Way or Another" with a band called 400 Pounds of Punk.

According to Blackwell, the rockstar was working as a session engineer while the band recorded a cassette called He Once Ate A Small Child. The brash punk rendition of the '80s hit was on that tape, and features White on vocals.

In an essay written for Discogs, Blackwell explains how he found the cassette in his basement, declaring that the recording is “the rarest physical release of a Jack White performance" and “was completely undocumented” until now.

Listen to the cover below.

White is currently on tour supporting his latest solo album, Boarding House Reach. Earlier this week, he showed his softer side by bringing his mom onstage during a show in Warsaw, Poland, and sang “Sto lat" — the Polish birthday song — with the crowd to celebrate her 88th birthday.

Although the guitar virtuoso is keeping himself plenty busy with solo material, it was recently announced that his indie supergroup the Raconteurs are working on their first new music in 10 years, starting with a reissue of their 2008 album Consolers of the Lonely, which will come with a special 7" that features two new songs from the band.

As if that wasn't enough, White also recently filmed a live concert documentary and has been flexing his philanthropist muscle by donating money to help renovate the house made famous by the iconic 1983 Francis Ford Coppola film, The Outsiders.
